چکیده

IEEE 802.11a is a new high-speed physical layer (PHY) defined for the 5 GHz U-NII bands as a supplement to the existing IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN) standard. In this paper, we give an overview of the IEEE 802.11a Orthogonal Frequency Domain Multiplexing (OFDM) PHY with eight different PHY rates as well as the distributed coordination function (DCF) of the IEEE 802.11 MAC, then derive the goodput performance analytically for peer-to-peer communication under the DCF. Based on the numerical results, we claim that link adaptation, which performs both dynamic fragmentation and PHY rate selection depending on the wireless channel condition between the transmitter and receiver, is an attractive way to improve the goodput performance of an IEEE 802.11a wireless LAN. Finally, we propose a system architecture to perform link adaptation.

Goodput Analysis and Link Adaptation for IEEE 802.11a Wireless LANs

Link adaptation to dynamically select the data transmission rate at a given time has been recognized as an effective way to improve the goodput performance of the IEEE 802.11 wireless local-area networks (WLANs). Recently, with the introduction of the new high-speed 802.11a physical layer (PHY), it is even more important to have a well-designed link adaptation scheme work with the 802.11a PHY s...

Energy-Efficient PCF Operation of IEEE 802.11a Wireless LAN

In this paper, we demonstrate the energy-efficient Point Coordination Function (PCF) operation of IEEE 802.11a wireless LAN (WLAN) via both transmit power control (TPC) and physical layer (PHY) rate adaptation. First, we derive the energy-consumption performance analytically for uplink data transmissions under the PCF. From the evaluation results, we observe that significant energy savings can ...

Achieving optimal performance in IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs with the combination of link adaptation and adaptive backoff

IEEE 802.11 is one of the most popular wireless LAN standards [Wireless LAN Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) specifications, IEEE Standard 802.11, August 1999]. In the paper, we propose a simple analytical model, which helps one obtain deep insight into the mechanism of achieving optimal performance by using IEEE 802.11 DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) protocol. The f...

Protocol Modifications for Improved Co-Channel Wireless LAN Goodput in Partitioned Spaces

Partitions can play a significant role in minimising cochannel interference of Wireless LANs by attenuating signals across room boundaries. This could pave the way towards higher density deployments in home and office environments through spatial channel reuse. Yet, due to protocol limitations, the latest incantation of IEEE 802.11 standard is still unable to take advantage of this fact: Despit...
